I am an architect working in the Yorkshire landscape.
When I visit a site for the first time, I try to be quiet.
I take in the wider landscape — its contours, colours, the direction of the weather, where the sun will rise and where it will set. A wood on the horizon. A river. A church spire in a nearby village. The things that have always been here.
Then the site itself. How it sits within that wider world. What it receives — light, shelter, views near and far. The approach, the arrival, the particular quality of being in that specific place.
By the time I am thinking about a building, I am thinking about two things simultaneously: the land, and the people who will live in it. What they love, how they move through their days, what a good morning looks like for them.
A house has to be right for both.
Silhouette takes on one or two commissions a year.
