Mondrian Garden

A sunken garden on the Yorkshire Wolds, set into a bank excavated behind a Victorian schoolhouse. The composition is laid out as a Mondrian — rectangular planes of stone, brick, tile and rendered wall arranged in flat geometry, framed by retaining walls of varying height. A set of steps cut into the bank takes its proportions from the granary steps of local farm buildings. Materials throughout are drawn from the local vernacular. Completed 2010.
