Papillon
A monumental corten steel gate set in the open landscape near Malton, North Yorkshire. The composition, cut from sheet steel, traces the path of a butterfly crossing a field of barbed wire — drawn directly from a 1941 watercolour by Karl Bodek and Kurt Conrad Löw, made while interned at the Gurs camp in southern France. The painting is held in the Yad Vashem collection. The gate forms the threshold to a group of timber structures placed around young tree saplings, their forms abstracted from the same source. Permanent installation. Viewing by appointment.
